About me
Hello there, my name is Rob! I love to create engaging experiences for other people, always have questions about why and how things work and enjoy pulling threads to get to the bottom of a problem. These all combine for me in game design.
Tiny beginnings
It all started with a silly little card game called 'Up the Creek' – a game which, admittedly, did not age very well – that we kept in an old green coffee can. We were missing cards by the time I came into the family and couldn't fully play by the rules. So, I made my own rules for the game with a rock-paper-scissors trick-taking mechanic. As I grew up, I created Mario Party clones and put together our own custom copy of Monopoly out of construction paper. In those days, I had a lot to learn about game and interaction design.
Wide wonderful world
Catan blew my 12-year-old mind. It was the first highly thematic game I had played featuring probabilities, various resource types and building mechanics. I created my own custom configurations, rules and campaigns. It wouldn't be long before I became aware of the wide world of Board Games. Ticket to Ride, 7 Wonders, Terra Mystica, and on and on. I also started a tabletop role playing game (RPG) called GURPS. Playing so many wonderful games only fueled and inspired me more to make my own.
My first real game
In 2015, I had the idea for a board game that played like an RPG. I saw a lot of games doing this but I had a unique concept of team-based competition, a focus on side-quests, card-based combat, and the ability to respond to encounters in alternative ways to fighting. I also wanted to mitigate the effect of bad dice rolls and created Tenacity, which you gain specifically when you roll a 'fail', and can use in future dice rolls. I eventually named this game Travelers of Tryphosa, which I launched and funded on Kickstarter in 2021.
More games and the future
I should really write this part.
